Great Western Colliery, Hopkinstown, Rhondda

 

This is the colliery (map) where the disaster of 14th April 1893 killed 58 miners including two of our ancestors –

 

William Bowers of 19 Rickards St aged 23, single

(son of James Bowers and Eliza Griffiths)

 

George Lewis of 19 Rickards St aged 16, single

(son of John Kane Lewis and Eliza Griffiths -
Eliza re-married after James’ death in 1872)

This colliery is due to be renovated and turned into a museum to represent all of the lost collieries in the Rhondda valleys.
